We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting permanent, affordable workforce housing in Siskiyou County, specifically for residents essential to the community.
“In 2024, an eclectic group of Siskiyou County residents perked up their ears and heard a call to action regarding the so-called local housing crisis. Among them were teachers, authors, farmers, publishers, carpenters, artists, rental owners, tech workers, tile setters, and long-term county residents of many stripes. In a big community meeting, we raised concerns and voiced suggestions.
At the time I think there was a general consensus - housing costs in Siskiyou County were outpacing what the local wage economy could support. Something had to be done to retain those essential locals who ‘kept the lights on’ in our towns… and quickly.
After the first few meetings, our pace settled into a grassroots march, refining our understanding of issues, performing outreach and survey work, connecting with local governments, and ultimately organizing ourselves.
In 2025, we incorporated as a CA non-profit, with a two-fold mission: To support community-focused housing initiatives, and to hold land in trust for the benefit of residents and the environment, via a ‘Community Land Trust’.
In the same year, we lost Catherine, an exceptionally passionate and astute housing advocate, long-time Siskiyou County resident, and dear friend. Since then, I’ve been reminded of the urgency of the moment - housing for all, now! Yet… stably, sustainably. The moment calls for sensitivity, consistency, and action.
These days, the Siskiyou Housing Alliance is a solid, devoted group of volunteers that I deeply enjoy spending focused afternoon potlucks and days at info booths with. It’s a collection of voices inspired to support others, and to think creatively for the benefit of the places they cherish. Ultimately, SHA is a ‘community discovering what it cares about’, and a promising motion in an important moment.
May we all seek shelter, and find it. ”
